Shots From The Road: IDLES in Los Angeles

One of the most exciting live bands on the planet meets the mark with a sold-out and rowdy Night 2 at The Palladium.

Hollywood Palladium on May 14, 2024:

Explosiveness defined, IDLES are on a victory run in support of the trailblazing TANGK (available now via Partisan Records) — a moving composition expanding on themes of love and loss with an equally passionate instrumentation. With that in mind, its live rendition could only reflect those same characteristics, and that it did. On the night of May 14th, the Hollywood Palladium was host to the IDLES punk bravado for two back to back nights that were highly anticipated and high octane.

Like the header image above would suggest, IDLES is an engaging band. YOU WILL MOVE and YOU WILL SWEAT. IDEA 01 set things off with aplomb, stirring the many who inched closer to frontman Joseph Talbot and the commanding performance that followed. Whether it be their contemporary TANGK staples or those from Brutalism (2017) and Ultra Mono (2020), it was electrifying from each passing track to the next and energy was never scarce. The room was brimming with joyous aggression as Colossus, The Wheel, and Gift Horse among others filled the room. Eclectic is but one way to describe the band's expansive sound, and The Palladium sure gave their output its flowers.

You never know what you're going to get at an IDLES show. A Tony Hawk speech? Check. An acapella sing-a-long of Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas? Check. A guitarist with an itch for constantly crowd surfing? Check. It's an outlandish spectacle that never ceases to amaze from beginning to end, and it's what keeps so many of their fervent fans on edge, waiting for what new layer is set to unfold. The GRAMMY nominations, the sold-out shows, the acclaimed discography — it's all warranted. We're at the height of it all for British outfit and what went down that night at The Palladium was truly welcomed and memorable. In short, IDLES are among the most exciting performers today in a world where tours are abundant.
