The best album covers of June 2021

Metal reigned supreme among the genres with an eclectic selection.

Words by Luis (@luis.hoa):

In the blink of an eye, we're halfway done with the year. One could say this is due in part to the return of the fast-paced lifestyles that were put on a standstill because of the pandemic. Whatever the reason, time flies but the arts never settle and they accompany us through it all. This column is testament to the quality that has stayed consistent and today's June entry presents varied offerings in the cover art arena, an arena that is constantly dominated by metal and its many subgenres.

To start, June welcomed one of this year's most talked about album covers, that being Helloween's self-titled record. Eliran Kantor's work blew many away upon announcement and found itself as a topic of discussion throughout the Helloween community, making its way onto tattoos, tribute paintings, and more fan-driven initiatives. Withered's new album Verloren showcased Paul Romano's range of talents for one of this year's most unique covers yet for it required a multi-faceted approach of wood structures, sculptures, lighting, photography, and ultimately, patience. Instead of going in-depth with what makes Alex Eckman-Lawn's art for Seputus so grand, check out our Behind the Cover column with both parties for an inside look at how it all came together. Chad Wehrle's work also made an appearance earlier this month for how seamless it coincides with The Absence and the band's harrowing themes. Cauê Piloto continues his streak of raw, emotive covers, this time for funeral doom duo Hellish Form. Shindy, who you will see on the site in the coming weeks for a neat feature, crafted yet another chaotic cover that is representative of the maelstrom of sound that is Alustrium's A Monument To Silence. There's no question as to why he's in high demand. This is an art column, so I'll stop here and let you gaze in awe of the covers below for they introduce records just as fantastic.
