Fresh off the heels of their latest chapter, Purge (Avalanche Recordings), Godflesh are bringing its expansive wonder to stages across North America, celebrating new feats and past musical achievements with a career-spanning set for all. Selections from the seminal Streetcleaner (1989), their self-titled (1988) debut, Pure (1991), Selfless (1994), and more have hit/are hitting hard near you and the band's recent DNA Lounge performance set the tone for the contemporary strengths of mastermind Justin K. Broadrick and Ben Green.
It all begins with the standout Nero from this year's Purge and proceeds into another new offering Land Lord, highlight the breadth that exists within the Godflesh arsenal. From there on out, the brand tread back to older territory with hits like Shut Me Down, Post Self, and Like Rats stirring the packed room. Broadrick's hair flies with every headbang, in unison with those in attendance.
The celebratory set was truly tantalizing as it angered, excited, and thrilled overall from one track to the next. The somber atmosphere created by dark blue backlights and Streetcleaner's album cover spread across the digital screen was an ideal compliment to the band's menacing craft. Crush My Soul and Slateman wrapped things off with conviction and the rumbling DNA Lounge came to halt in appreciation for the duo. No matter where you fall on the Godflesh timeline, the ongoing tour has much in the realm of variation and all who bask in their musicianship will leave pleased. Purge is already among this year's most exquisite industrial albums at the moment and in the live setting, its power is elevated to new heights.
