Shots From The Road: Kublai Khain TX in Anaheim

Updated: Apr 2

None harder than this wrecking ball of a touring bill featuring Sunami, Judiciary, and Momentum, which sold out and brought pain to the House of Blues.

House of Blues in Anaheim on March 29, 2024:

"We haven't done a proper headline tour in four long years," commented Kublai Khan TX late last year as they shed the light on their hard-hitting North American Tour, which is now underway after selling out a variety of shows well in advance of the start date, and rightfully so. Beyond having an grand headliner, the tour features an ensemble of hardcore standouts including the likes of Sunami, Incendiary, and Momentum, rounding out a strong evening from beginning to end and allowing only the mid-set intermissions for breathing room. That was the case for Friday night's showing at House of Blues in Anaheim — a strong showing that not only defined Kublai Khan's commitment to their craft, but paved the way for a thrilling new chapter to come following 2022's Lowest Form of Animal EP.

It's a difficult feat to meet or even exceed the blood-curling energy that filled the room following each of the predecessor sets, but with a setlist that opened with Theory of Mind and proceeded to level the venue with selections from across their discography, it's clear as to why the Texas unit holds a position amongst the top dogs in contemporary hardcore. Matthew Honeycutt's commanding stage presence was infectious, Nolan Bryant and Eric English delivered on big riffs, and Isaac Lamb stood tall as the heartbeat of the performance, exploding on moment's notice. The Hammer, Self-Destruct, Us & Them, the latest single Low Tech, and deep cut Eyes Up from the band's earlier material all filled the room with a towering energy infectious enough to thrill those hearing in the distance. In short, Kublai Khan lead one of the best tours of 2024's first half. It's a look back at defining songs that shaped the upwards trajectory of a band reaching a culminating best, all the while providing a spotlight for the bright future ahead for hardcore.
