Post-punk poetry hit the historic cemetery grounds, turning the venue into an ideal setting of

brooding intensity and restless energy.

Dublin's own Fontaines D.C. have reached a mark in their evolution where they no longer need to prove they belong in the conversation. They command it. Late last month on September 25, the Irish five-piece hit Hollywood Forever and delivered a 19-song set that showcased their creative instinct, an unmistakable sonic identity, and the ability to make a live performance feel both unpredictable and completely their own.

With the cemetery’s historic grounds providing an appropriately cinematic backdrop, Fontaines D.C. demonstrated that their appeal extends well beyond the revivalist post-punk label once attached to them. They are now a band operating on a much broader emotional and musical canvas, and it all leads to this week's release of Dopamine Chamber.

From the opening rush of Boys in the Better Land through the jagged momentum of Nabokov and Jackie Down the Line, the group showed precisely why its live reputation continues to grow. The five musicians move with a tightly wound chemistry that never feels mechanical. Grian Chatten remains an extraordinary frontman, commanding attention through presence rather than conventional rock-star theatrics. His singular vocal phrasing, physical intensity, and ability to shift between detached cool and unfiltered emotion give the performances a theatrical edge without diminishing their authenticity.

By the time Starburster arrived, preceded by its In Heaven introduction, the band had turned its carefully constructed unease into a full-bodied release. The set moved confidently between the wiry urgency of early material and the widescreen atmosphere of Romance (2024) among more of the group’s more recent work. Favourite offered a melodic rush, In the Modern World opened up a more reflective space, and I Love You brought the evening back to the fierce lyrical and emotional intensity that has always distinguished the band.

The most intriguing glimpse of what comes next came through selections from Dopamine Chamber: Marianne, Happy for You, and Six Shot Morning. Their inclusion made the concert feel less like a victory lap than a statement of intent. Rather than leaning exclusively on the songs that have already established them as one of contemporary rock’s most distinctive acts, Fontaines D.C. gave their new material space alongside proven live favorites, suggesting a band eager to keep moving rather than repeat a winning formula. The album’s anticipation lies in that willingness to explore new territory while retaining the tension, atmosphere, and lyrical ambition that make the group unmistakable.

At Hollywood Forever, Fontaines D.C. made a convincing case for why they remain one of the most exciting bands working today. Their strength is not simply the intensity of their guitars or the magnetism of their frontman, but the way those elements serve a larger artistic vision. They can be confrontational without becoming one-dimensional, melodic without losing their edge, and ambitious without sacrificing the visceral pleasure of a great rock show.
